Selah

“Hi, Mom. I—“
“Don’t worry about us, Honey.” Mom calmly says on the phone, “The tsunami alert ends at Warner.” (Warner Avenue is less than a half-mile from my parents’ house-- a mere swish of a whale’s tale. )

Ridiculously, I’m thinking—Mom can’t swim.
Just as ridiculously, she tells me about how much oxygen they have at home for Daddy.

We’re in the midst of a family earthquake and tsunami. Daddy’s health has been fragile for a long time, and we’ve just put him on hospice home care. We’re cherishing the days we have. At the same time, we’re bracing for the quake of death and impact of waves of grief. In times like this, having God as our bulwark and strength is infinitely precious and unspeakably reassuring.

Because of today's disaster in Japan, a verse has been running through my mind today. ( BTW Selah is a term that scholars think is a direction to the reader/cantor to raise his voice to emphasize the point or pause so everyone can reflect on the truth.)

Psalm 46:
1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore will not we fear , though the earth be removed , and though the mountains be carried into the midst
of the sea; 3 Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof., Selah.

Worldwise or personally, we have times of great turmoil. Which brings me right back to not just the global truth, but a personal reminder:

1 God is my refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore I will not fear
SELAH.

  1. Truly a testing time for us at this present time Cathy.I found myself humming PSALM 46.

At the beginning of my Psalm Book, the second page has a heading"HELP IN TIME OF NEED." and lists the appropriate Readings (eg " The Way of SALVATION" ...JOHN 3:3 etc.)
The heading for PSALM 46 depicts it beautifully. " COURAGE in Time of Fear"..OH SO TRUE!
    A thought provoking post,Cathy.

  3. Beautiful post Cathy. So sorry to hear about your dad being placed on hospice. My family went through that with my dad last year. Give your dad a kiss, and tell him you love him every time you see him. Let him know you'll be okay, and that you'll take care of your mom until you all meet again in glory. Will pray for peace, strength, and God's will.

  7. Watching so many of you walk through the valley of the shadow of death with your parents has caused me to treasure the time I still have with my parents. It's also been encouraging to see how you've grown in faith through the sadness and been able to find meaningful ways to keep the memories alive. Thank you for your kind words, examples, and prayers.
    Cathy
