Treats from the Past

Our church does a Harvest Party, neighbors' kids come trick-or-treating, and several adults appear at work in costume.
What a great excuse to enjoy costumes!
So here are some historical treats for you.
This first shows styles and the drastic change from 1908's Edwardian women to the 1920's flappers.

A fun fact: Women have cared about the environment for ages. In the Edwardian Era, the plumage of water fowl were extremely fashionable for hats. The more, the better. The longer, the better. When it became known that the style was endangering several species, women immediately stopped buying and wearing feathers. Many warehouses full of expensive feathers "accidentally" burned down and collected money from the insurance companies.

And now for the second treat: (No tricks from me.) This is a bit long, but I found it hilarious and well worth ten minutes. Victorian girls from a boarding house are going on an outing: (For some reason, I can't embed the video, so here's the link.

Don't you adore the swim suits? The parasols?
Happiness and treats to you all,
Cathy

  1. Thanks for sharing, Cathy. Really enjoyed seeing Miss Knapp trying to keep up with those girls on Coney Island. How funny! Glad she didn't injure anyone with that parasol--she was wielding it like a weapon.

  2. Cath!! You're so right--that video is hilarious!! And I agree with Judy's comment about Miss Knapp and her parasol--at the beginning I was afraid she might jab someone's eye out. ~ Cannot imagine rolling around in one of those big wheels, though---YUK! Almost made me feel queasy watching them, LOL. Thanks so much for sharing this, and hope your coming week is filled with many treats! Hugs, PJ

  3. Yes! Mrs. Knapp scared me with that parasol! I got a kick out of how carefully the girls all crowded into the car, all used their parasols for the ride, then leapt down like lemmings.

  4. Hilarious video! My heart goes out to the driver though, he was a small man and to help all those women get out of that vehicle was not easy! I thought that he was going to topple over with one lady for a moment!

  5. Veronica, I'll bet some of those girls' outfits weighed more than that small man.
Thank heavens Mrs. Knapp made the one girl get out of the front seat so the man would be able to sit up front. I can't decide whether he was driving. He's on the correct side, but cars from Europe still had the steering wheel on the opposite side.

  6. This was so funny! The girls looked like they were having a fun time. I got so amused at Mrs. Knapp wielding her parasol!
Thanks for sharing both clips with us.

  7. Mrs, Knapp amused me, too. I do think part of her parasol-weilding antics were just for bluster. Methinks she might have been a pretty good mistress since she took them all out for fun and did keep a good eye on the girls.
